RARE KAGU BIRD ON COIN
A rare, nearly flightless, Kagu bird is featured on the obverse of the above aluminum 50 Centimes and 5 Francs coins from New Caledonia. 50 Centimes was one of the first coins to be issued for this French possession. A seated figure of Marianne, the symbol of France, is on the reverse. The Kagu is only found in New Caledonia.
