The Kereguelen Islands, also known as the Desolation Islands, are a French possession in Southern Indian Ocean. The Islands are the home to 50 to 100 scientists and researchers and a staff that runs a satellite tracking station. The first coins for the islands were struck in 2011. They consist of a 30mm brass 100 Francs that pictures an Albatross and a 28.5mm ringed bimetallic 500 Francs that depicts two Sperm Whales, (Cachalot in French). The islands were home to a Norwegian Whaling station during the early 20th century. The Arms of the islands are on the back of the coins.
